Tunning guides are a fantastic aid, but users need to be aware that the tuning guide cannot be written to be specific to your boat and rig. This is because all boats and rigs typically exhibit small differences in characteristics, despite the best efforts of manufacturers to produce products of consistent physical properties.
Not only can the stiffness and dimensions vary slightly, even when using the same construction techniques, people put rigs together slightly differently and this also affects their characteristics.
Thankfully, most rigs and boats can be tuned to be fast, but due to the differences that tend to prevail, the fast settings for a selection of rigs and boats will be different.
So please use the tuning guides as a good way of finding a baseline setting that should be close to ideal for your boat and rig. From that baseline setting, you will need to experiment and tune your own boat to find the optimum setting for you and your boat in the conditions that prevail on the day.
The NJSails tuning guides currently focus on the largest rigs for both the DF65 and the DF95 and provide principles for adjustment when switching over to the smaller rigs.
For baseline settings covering all rigs, Phil Burgess' tuning guides are provided (with permission from Phil).
